Those plastic grocery bags that basically never decompose (1,000 years!) finally have something else to do besides line your garbage cans—or worse, stack up in landfills.
Scientists in India have found a way to melt them down into fuel! By heating the bags under 400-500 degrees Celsius, the bag’s molecules break apart and release molecules that are like the ones we use for energy—petrochemical fuels.
It may not be the cleanest source of energy, but it’s a much better alternative to what they’re being used for now. Baby steps, right?
