Congrats to the El Hierro, the smallest of the Canary Islands and the first island ever to be run 100% off of wind power!
The island built 5 wind turbines to harvest this renewable energy, and the amount it will produce should be more than enough to power the lives of the 10,000 inhabitants on the island.
The wind turbines will use the excess power to pump water from into a reservoir 700 meters up. So when the wind just isn’t blowing, backup power will come simply by opening a valve and letting gravity bring the water down, using that kinetic energy to create electricity. Simple and green.
This alternate energy source will cut CO2 emissions by over 18,000 tons a year! Hopefully El Hierro is only the first island to switch to wind power.
